The first NCAA Division I school to give scholarships to female basketball players, USC became a powerhouse in the early 1980s. Led by Cheryl Miller, Cynthia Cooper, and the McGee twins (Paula and Pam), they won back-to-back national titles in 1983 and 1984. The Women of Troy were the first women’s team to be invited to the White House, and Miller was the first female basketball player to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. They are even given significant credit for the eventual birth of the WNBA (in which Cynthia Cooper led the Houston Comets to four straight championships).
